General Reference Maps 

Maps showing physical (human and man-made) features in an area. The purpose is too summarise the landscape for later navigational use. 

Thematic Maps 

Maps that depict information on a particular topic or theme. This detail may be physical, statistical, measured or interpreted. 

Topographic Maps 

These maps also summarise the landscape, however they also show elevation in detail. 

Cadastral Map 

Maps that show the boundaries and ownerships of land. 

Series Maps

These maps typically have a constant scale, and join together in a regular fashion to document an area.
